Apple continues to be affected by coronavirus outbreaks around the world. LG Innotek, which supplies camera modules to the iPhone, was forced to close one of its factories after a worker contracted the virus, Reuters reported this weekend. The report explained that both Samsung and LG Innotek were forced to close factories in South Korea this weekend. The factories are located in the city of Kuo, near Daegu, where most of the cases of the virus have so far surfaced in South Korea. The closure of the LG Innotek plant is even more important to Apple, as LG Innotek provides camera modules for the iPhone. Reuters reported that the company’s South Korean plant will be closed for disinfection on Monday. Whether that means it will reopen on Tuesday remains to be seen. LG Innotek may also offer camera modules for the iPhone 12, which will be launched this fall. If LG Innotek were to stay out of business for only a few days, it would not have had a significant impact on iPhone production, but that is still the case. In a recent interview with Fox Business, Cook expressed optimism about China’s current coronavirus situation. He also stressed that iPhone parts and consumables come from all over the world. In China, in particular, Cook said, he believes the government is “controlling” the status of the coronavirus. In my opinion, China is controlling the coronavirus. I mean, if you look at the numbers, they’re falling every day. So I’m very optimistic about that. Most importantly, this suggests that Apple’s supply chain disruption can still occur as the coronavirus becomes a global problem, even though Cook believes the situation in China is “under control”.
