Apple’s market name is probably the most protected component of the new iPhone, people have used two names to reference the rumored iPhone 8 replacements: the iPhone SE 2 and the iPhone 9. Apple calls the new entry-level model the “iPhone SE” and the new hardware version 2020. Apple initially used the market name for the iPhone SE for the 4-inch model, which uses the iPhone 5s body and the iPhone 6s’ camera and processor.
We expect the new model to use the same chips as the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Plus: Apple’s A13 processor. This is two generations older than the iPhone 8’s A11 Bionic chip. The new iPhone SE may no longer be popular with iPhone 6 customers with major new software updates. The A13 has Apple Arcade and augmented reality features that are unlikely to run on software on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

While we can’t be sure of the three price points for Apple’s new iPhone SE, Mr. Guo reported last fall that Apple plans to start with the new model from $399. The iPhone 8 currently costs $449. The new iPhone SE is expected to have the same design as the iPhone 8, but by removing the 3D Touch, a feature of the older iPhone, it could greatly extend battery life.
The 2020 iPhone SE is also a new feature compared to the replacement iPhone 8: Express Card and future CarKey support. While it’s not clear when Apple will announce the 2020 iPhone SE, Apple is likely to go public and start accepting orders for new iPhones as soon as possible. Earlier this week, the retailers are preparing to start marketing new iPhones from Sunday. This does not rule out an official announcement early next week.
