The spread of a new type of coronavirus (also known as the Wuhan coronavirus) in China could seriously damage Apple’s production line. Specifically, this could affect the manufacture of the new iPhone 9 (or SE 2) and AirPods. The virus has spread to Hubei province, which borders Henan province and near Guangdong province, and hosts Apple’s main production center, the Nikkei Asia Review reported. A Bloomberg report quoted sources as saying the upcoming iPhone 9 could be affected by the spread of the virus, particularly by Measures taken by Chinese authorities to contain it. The Chinese government is urging workers to stay in cities infected with the coronavirus and has quarantined the entire city of Wuhan, which is believed to have originated. Insiders also point out that AirPods (second generation and professional version) may be the victim of slowing production. Apple is expected to begin mass production of the iPhone 9 in February and plans to launch and start selling the phone in March. The company has a dual procurement system to ensure that problems at one plant do not seriously hamper the production of the device, so the iPhone 9 could fail to lunch.
