Apple has stopped using its 12-inch MacBook and previous MacBook Air as it updates its Retina MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops today. Now, the updated lineup includes the Retina 13-inch MacBook Air and the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. Apple updated its notebook lineup this morning by making changes to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro as it announced its ‘Back to School’ promotion. The basic MacBook Pro, priced at US$1,299, was previously a non-Touch Bar version. It now comes with the latest 8th generation quad-core processor and adds Touch Bar. Meanwhile, Retina MacBook Air has acquired Apple’s True Tone display technology and prices have fallen. With these updates, Apple officially stopped selling two of its laptops, the 12-inch MacBook and the previous MacBook Air. While the shutdown of the old MacBook Air is not surprising, as Apple has cut the entry price of the Retina MacBook Air by US$100, the termination of the 12-inch MacBook could disappoint and compact Macs for lightweight Apple users. That said, when the 13-inch Retina MacBook Air was launched last fall, it had lower prices, more ports, Touch ID and longer battery life, and a little heavier than the two-pound MacBook, making the future of the 12-inch MacBook questionable. As we pointed out in last fall’s MacBook Air comparison, the 13-inch Air is slightly larger than the 12-inch MacBook, but the display is larger. Notably, this is the second time Apple has stopped its MacBook line. After the original launch of the computer in 2006, Apple stopped selling plastic MacBook in 2010. The aluminum 12-inch Retina MacBook debuted in 2015 and sold it for four years until today. This is Apple’s new Mac series.
